Airlines issue travel waivers ahead of Midwest winter storm –

Sun Country and Delta Air Lines are among those issuing waivers for flights to and from Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS — It’s not just a case of déjà vu – airlines really are gearing up for another round of winter weather that could snarl travel across the Midwest.

Just a few weeks after a monster storm impacted holiday travel plans for passengers around the country, and days after Southwest Airlines finally resumed close to normal operations following days of delays and cancellations, multiple airlines have started issuing travel waivers for passengers with upcoming flights.

Here’s a look at which airlines are issuing waivers for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and other Midwest airports:

American Airlines will waive change fees for people traveling through the Rocky Mountains and the Midwest in the coming days. Fees are waived if you:

  • Are booked in any fare class, including Basic Economy
  • Bought your ticket by Jan. 1, 2023
  • Are scheduled to travel Jan. 2 – 4, 2023
  • Can travel Jan. 2 – 7, 2023
  • Don’t change your origin or destination city
  • Rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference

Changes must be booked by Jan. 4.

More than two dozen airports, including Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and several other Minnesota airports, are eligible for travel waivers.

Impacted travel dates are Jan. 2-4, 2023. Fare differences will be waived for tickets rebooked on or before Jan. 7 in the same cabin of service as the original ticket. If rebooked travel happens after Jan. 7, a fare difference may apply.

Sun Country will allow passengers who purchased tickets to and from MSP to rebook to another Sun Country flight one time with no additional cost if:

  • Original tickets were purchased before Jan. 2, 2023
  • Travel was originally for Jan. 2 2023 (scheduled flight must depart after 6 p.m.) and Jan. 3, 2023
  • New travel begins by Jan. 10, 2023
  • Space is available within the same cabin as the original ticket

Change fees and fare differences will be waived for covered United flights, as long as travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin (any fare class) and between the same cities as originally ticketed.

The original ticket must have been purchased by Dec. 29, 2022 for original travel between Jan. 1-3, 2023.

The rebooking window continues until Jan. 6, 2023.
